Presenter: Robert Hertzberg
Twice elected unanimously
as Speaker of the California State Assembly and now Speaker Emeritus, Robert M.
Hertzberg has devoted his time in office to solving today's
problems while helping to build the California of tomorrow.
First elected to the
Assembly in 1996, and later chosen as Speaker in January of 2000,
Speaker Hertzberg led the charge as California made record
investments improving public schools, building affordable housing,
relieving traffic congestion and utilizing the state's community
colleges as the classrooms for the New Economy.
During his tenure as
Speaker, Hertzberg distinguished himself as an outspoken supporter
of proactive regional strategies to accommodate and manage the
anticipated future growth of California. In particular, the
Speaker Emeritus played a key leadership role in encouraging
regional approaches to governance and planning in California, in order
to preserve and enhance the unique natural resources and quality
of life that characterize the Golden State. While
Speaker, Hertzberg appointed a special Speaker's Commission on
Regionalism to develop innovative state government policies and strategies
that encourage regional collaboration in addressing the major
economic, social, and environmental challenges that confront
California. This Commission issued an important report with a
series of recommendations for how state government and state
policy can encourage solutions that are regional in scope. You can
find a copy of the report online at: http://www.regionalism.org/news/item.php?id=27
Prior to his election,
Hertzberg worked as a business and real estate attorney after
years of practicing as a constitutional lawyer, and briefed cases
before the U.S. Supreme court and co-authoring a book on real
estate law.
Speaker Hertzberg
graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Redlands in 1976,
and from the University of California, Hastings Law School in
1979.
